A significant step forward in improving air quality, comfort and safety for everyone who uses our indoor aquatic facilities.

Leschenault Leisure Centre (LLC) is currently installing a brand new HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system, representing a $1.2 million investment by the Shire of Harvey.

This major upgrade is a significant step forward in improving air quality, comfort and safety within our indoor aquatic facilities.

Why is an HVAC system so important in an indoor pool?

An HVAC system controls the air inside a building. In an indoor aquatic environment, it works much harder than in a standard facility due to warm water, high humidity and the use of pool chemicals.

In simple terms, the air handling system:

  • Brings fresh air into the pool hall
  • Removes stale air and chemical by-products
  • Controls temperature and humidity
  • Helps protect both people and the building

When operating effectively, it reduces strong chemical smells, helps minimise eye, skin and breathing irritation, improves visibility, and creates a more comfortable environment for swimmers, spectators and staff.

Addressing recent concerns

We understand some customers have recently experienced sore eyes, skin irritation and strong “chlorine” smells. While our chlorine levels are tested multiple times daily and remain within Health Department requirements, these symptoms are often caused by chloramines, which form when chlorine combines with contaminants in the water and linger in the air. The new HVAC system will help remove these airborne irritants and improve overall air circulation and freshness.

The new system being installed at LLC will significantly improve the facility’s ability to:

  • Remove chloramine fumes from the air
  • Improve air circulation and freshness
  • Create a healthier indoor environment

This upgrade works alongside our existing water quality management to deliver a safer and more comfortable swimming experience.

What you can expect to notice once the system is live

While HVAC systems largely operate behind the scenes, they are among the most important and complex components of an indoor aquatic facility.  Once the new HVAC system is fully operational, customers can expect to notice:

  • Reduced chemical odours in the pool hall
  • Clearer air and improved visibility
  • A more comfortable temperature and humidity level
  • Less irritation to eyes, skin and breathing

These improvements may be gradual as the system is fine-tuned, but the overall change should be noticeable.

What about other upgrades at Leschenault Leisure Centre?

We recognise the community’s interest in seeing further improvements across several areas at LLC.

Shire staff are currently undertaking a comprehensive asset maintenance audit to assess the condition of the Centre’s infrastructure. This process will help identify priority works and inform future planning, including the funding required to deliver upgrades in a responsible and staged manner.

The HVAC upgrade represents a significant investment and an important step in our ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving the Centre for our community.
